GRADES ONE TO SIX IDENTIFY INDIVIDUAL TALENTS.
We are acutely aware of the diverse levels of development among children: therefore, the educational programs in grades one through six identify individual talents and encourage each child to progress at his/her pace in order to realize his/her potential.
Praise, positive reinforcement and continual affirmation of one's self-worth are a routine part of a youngster's day. Varied teaching modes, techniques and resources are used to meet the different learning styles of our students.
We believe that READING is the cornerstone of success; accordingly, the academic program at MARK COUNTRY DAY revolves around the reading curriculum. Children are taught to read for "understanding, information and enjoyment". Individualized and small group instruction, peer interaction and healthy competition are used as effective learning tools. Emphasis is placed on basic skills and reading for comprehension. Students are also encouraged to read novels and newspapers to increase their reading prowess.
Students in grades one through six are ability-grouped in MATHEMATICS so that they might better master the subject matter. Understanding mathematical concepts, problem solving, computational accuracy and number relationships are stressed. "Playing the Stock Market" is but one of several activities that makes math "come alive" for our children.
A global approach in the study of SOCIAL STUDIES offers students a better understanding of themselves, their neighbors and the world in which they live. Projects, research papers, field trips and involvement in local, state and national affairs complement the curriculum. What better way to learn about the Federal Government than an extended visit to Washington, DC?
Investigation, experimentation and hands-on activities make SCIENCE more meaningful. Field trips bring the study to life. A unique science musical serves as an excellent avenue for our students to showcase their knowledge of biology, chemistry , earth science and physiology. Departmentalization begins in grade three and exposes the students to the wonders of science as taught by a specialist.
COMPUTER EDUCATION, which begins in PreKindergarten, is a carefully designed program intended to make our students computer literate. The learning process involves two phases. Small groups work with a computer specialist to develop skills in word processing, data processing, keyboarding and computer programming. In addition, computers are used in the classroom to enrich and/or reinforce concepts in all disciplines. An extensive software library is available to both students and faculty. Membership in AOL (America Online) puts a wealth of information at our students' fingertips and enables them to reap the benefits of "surfing" the internet.
CREATIVE WRITING plays an important role in the core curriculum. Writing is taught and practiced extensively throughout the grades through journals, research papers, essays, letters and term papers.
Instruction in SPANISH begins in grade three. Emphasis is placed on conversation. Culture, customs and the history of Spanish-speaking nations are taught through games, music, drama, literature and, yes, even cooking!
At every level, students are involved with exciting age-appropriate activities that make MUSIC and ART come alive! From the basic fundamentals of music theory, to an appreciation of the history of music, to a hand-bell choir -- the children are encouraged to recognize the importance of music and the enjoyment it can bring. From experimenting in different art mediums, to an introduction to the "masters", to an understanding of the impact art has on our very existence -- children taste the joy art brings.
A structured PHYSICAL EDUCATION program emphasizing team sports, good sportsmanship and the value of competitiveness is further enhanced by our well-appointed gymnasium and extensive outdoor facilities.
